Dealing with different office personalities

February 21st, 2010

Apparently there are four main personality types and understanding how they work can be the key to building better relationships with them and in turn help your career.

Think about what type of personality your boss is – now, if you could learn what makes them tick, what they respond to and so on, wouldn’t it make your work life that little bit easier? Yes, we thought so. So here were are, the four main personality types you should be aware of in your workplace.

Extrovert
This is a person who most likely has an untidy desk and doesn’t always finish projects because they are lured to more exciting ones. They make instant decisions and usually hate admin work and routines, they would much prefer to be at events and parties. You may find them chatting away at the water cooler quite often.

Amiable
This person is usually the ‘peacemaker’ in the office, the one who probably isn’t terribly ambitious but is very happy to support and encourage others who are. They are usually on lots of commitees but only because they can’t say ‘no’ and want to please everyone.

Analytical
This person is always on time, has several computers and phones in case one fails and enjoys playing with spreadsheets, charts and projections. They will never make a decision on the spot as they prefer to go over all the facts first.

Pragmatic
This person likes to take charge and will always do business their way. They usually have a neat, organised desk and don’t take business rejection personally. They aren’t usually interested in how ‘exciting’ a project might be they only care about how much money it will cost or make and how soon it can be implemented or built.

So, bear in mind that facts and figures to appeal to the Analytical and Pragmatic, enthusiasm and excitement to appeal to the Extrovert and testimonials to appeal to the Amiable.

Keep your water cooler healthy

February 7th, 2010

Having a water cooler in your own home is wonderful, it keep your family healthy and hydrated and it’s so easy to access fresh, clean drinking water at all times of the day or night. However it is important that you maintain your water cooler to ensure it keeps providing you with the purified water that is should be.

Some people purchase a bottled water cooler, have the bottles delivered then sit back and don’t do anything else with it, this is a sure fire way to have your water cooler end up dirty and unhygenic. If you rent a water cooler you will usually have an on call site specialist who can come out to your home and sanitise your cooler for you, however if you do not have a service agreement with your supplier you will need to undertake the sanitisation yourself.

Sanitising your water cooler is very easy to do, you can purchase sanitisation kits online which come with detailed instructions of how to do it so there is no excuse for letting your water cooler fester up and cause unneccesary harm to you or your family.

It’s also important to clean the outside of the water cooler, particularly if it is white. You don’t want dirt marks all over the cooler, it looks terrible and is probably quite unhygenic. Grab some wet ones and go over the nozzles as well to get rid of all the grimy fingers that have been all over it.

Water Coolers provide more than water

December 28th, 2009

The office water cooler is a place of joy for most workers, it not only provides them with clean drinking water but it also provides a spot to relax, take a break and swap stories with fellow co-workers.

Walking around to the water cooler can become some people’s daily excerise as well, some people will even do laps of the office after they’ve filled up their cups or water bottles just to get a few extra steps in for the day.

There’s always the office joker who loves to stand by the water cooler to tell his (often, quite terrible) jokes too. There’s an art to telling jokes as you may already know, it’s so funny how some people can tell a joke and have everyone in stiches then someone else can tell the same joke and everyone stands there with blank looks on their faces thinking it was a “had to be there moment”.

If you want to tell a few jokes to your co-workers whilst at the office water cooler, may we suggest you prepare your joke so you know it back to front and practise delivering the punchline as that’s what’s going to make or break you.

Timing is everything and applies particularly importantly to comedy and joke telling so ensure you know when to pause and when to get faster and slower so your audience stays interested. The worst thing you can do is try to get the whole joke out in one breath then forget the punchline. People will no longer gather at the office water cooler to hear your bad jokes after that. However if you succeed you will forever known as that guy who tells all those funny jokes by the water cooler. It will give people even more reason to go fill up their cups.

How to choose the best water cooler

November 30th, 2009

Whether you need a water cooler for your home, office or school, chances are you’ll want to ensure you have made the best possible choice. The Water Cooler Company is London’s leading supplier of water coolers and has devised an easy four step way to ensure you choose the best possible cooler for your situation.

Step 1
Think about the room you will be putting the water cooler in, is it a room that is normally quiet because some water coolers can run with a little noise. Also is space going to be any issue? If space is limited a tabletop water cooler dispenser may be best for that area.

Step 2
You should check with co-workers or family members if they are okay with replacing water bottles on the top of the cooler. Five gallon water bottles are not light and will need to be replaced regularly. If lifting water bottles into your water cooler will be too much work over time, a bottom loading water cooler might be a winner in that situation.

Step 3
If you decide that you do not want to deal with water bottles at all have a look at the bottleless water coolers, you will save money with these as well as  you won’t have to pay to replace water bottles all the time. This is the best water cooler if you want something hassle free. A very popular option for schools.

Step 4
Use the internet and other helpful resources to compare water coolers, call up water cooler companies and ask them the questions you want answered. It’s also a good idea to go online and read the online reviews other customers have written.

Following these four basic steps you should be well on your way to choosing the best water cooler for you. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact us on 0845 500 4455 or email contact@thewatercoolercompany.com

‘Choose Water over Booze’ Latest advice from the Drinks Industry

September 1st, 2009

water cooler water is better than alcoholA new public health health campaign is being launched, with a £100 million backing from the Government, to try and encourage young people to drink less alcohol and more water on nights out. But will it be money well spent?

On a day where it was announced British girls are the worst drunks, it’s fitting that there was also a new announcement about the Governments latest plans to try and tackle the binge drinking culture in the UK.  The largest media campaign against alcohol abuse will be launched under the slogan ‘Why let good times go bad?’.

The campaign is going to be targetting pretty much every angle, ranging from beer mats printed with the slogan, stickers in off licences, to television adverts warning about ending your night badly.  Britain has long had a reputation as one of the biggest drinkers in Europe, and also as a country with the worst reputation for getting drunk abroad and causing trouble.  The Government is desperately trying to find ways to get rid of the stereotype, as not only is it bad for the countries image, but a huge amount of taxpayers money is spent on policing town centres to try and stop fights during pub and club closing time.

A huge amount of time is also spent treating people who have managed to injure themselves whilst having a night out on the town, either through fights, falls or drink driving accidents.  One of the aims that we found interesting here at The Water Cooler Company is to try and increase the amount of water that people drink on nights out.  In pubs they are going to be putting up posters with a picture of a pint glass full of water, with the tagline “Free pints all night.  Ask your bar staff for a drink of water”.  Whether this will lead to ‘merry’ people only reading the first sentence and getting very excited about free beer all night is yet to be seen… Nevertheless if it does encourage people to take on more water on a night out it can only be a good thing.

One of the campaigns that we can’t see working too well is the attempt at relating to young people out drinking by using supposed ‘lads humour’. One of the planned posters is going to have an image of beer goggles, and have the caption “Afraid you’ll pull a moose?  Stay focused by pacing your drinks”.  Funny? Not really. Patronizing?  Just a tad.

There’s even some speculation that this could lead venues and pubs to be installed with a water cooler or two to show the government they are making an effort to give their customers free water.

Supply Crisis Predicted by 2030

August 25th, 2009

water cooler environmental issuesThe press is today concentrating on comments from one of Britains’ top scientists, Professor John Beddington, the world is heading towards a ‘perfect storm’.  The culmination of the population increasing, alongside the decrease in the amount of food and energy available could lead to severe consequences.  Making having a plumbed in water cooler even more important.

Articles on both the BBC and The Guardian websites have been published saying that by 2030 the world will be in a crisis due to a combination of agricultural, environmental and social factors.   The reports make for fairly grim reading, and although parts of it is speculation, many scientists are in agreement that unless some changes are made it certainly could happen.

The reasons for the bad outlook is that it’s thought that in 2030 many of the affecting factors will come to a peak.  With the worlds population steadily increasing at an alarming rate, the need for crops and water is going to be higher than ever.  However, at the current moment there is only a food reserve of 14% of the entire population.  Climate change is something that could seriously affect this, if severe weather leads to floods or a draught many crops could be destroyed, leading to a serious shortage across the globe.

The big question is that even if  a disaster did not take place, whether we are still going to be able to keep up with the increase in population.  With a lot of our energy sources becoming less and less viable, the challenge is to either find a suitable, sustainable alternate energy source, or to ensure that in the meantime we do not push our luck in regards to our energy use at the moment.

Water is also one issue that the professor raises, in under developed parts of the world it is very much a struggle to find a constant supply of clean water to drink.  Therefore it’s more important than ever to make sure as little water as possible is wasted, and that the water you do drink is from an environmentally ethical source.  There’s not really a better way to ensure this than drinking water from the normal mains supply.  By having a plumbed in water cooler you are making sure that your home or office is only being supplied with water that hasn’t been transported for hundreds of miles, or is being stored in plastic bottles that are an unneccesary waste.
