Scientists Pioneer Drinking Water Collection From Storm Water

October 1st, 2009

Storm Rain Water Collected for Filtration

An international team of scientists working in South Australia believe they have discovered a method for extracting pure drinking water from storm water using both natural and artificical purification processes. The water, which was stored under the City of Salisbury in a porous limestone aquifer underground succesfully met drinking water health standards when tested after the purification process, which involved passing it via a reed bed or wwetland, months of natural filtration in the aquifer, aeration, carbon filtration, microfiltration and ultraviolet disinfection. See the full story here.

Having an interest in the global drinking water industry and the humanitarian issues around it, we at the Water Cooler Company welcome the news that this discovery could help prevent water shortages in dry or underdeveloped countries. Some of the filtration processes used on the collected storm water are similar to the purficiation filters which are fitted to our mains-fed water coolers, for example the use of activated carbon filters in all our machines to ensure what purity.

Thankfully in the UK we generally have abundant sources of suitable drinking water which can be filtered and cooled in a plumbed in water cooler without the need to turn to other methods for collecting drinking water. As a company we never forget the less fortunate around the world who do not have access to clean drinking water and our committed to the prevention of water wastage. Hopefully news of this scientific development can be part of the solution to problems of drinking water availability around the world.

Use of Brita filters for plumbed water coolers

The Water Cooler Company have noted a marked increase in the amount of customers who ask whether our water coolers come with Brita filtration, and we hope that the information below will allow them to understand our position and decide on whether to take the Brita option over our other water filter options.

Brita’s Water Filtration Experience

Brita technology has been applied to many areas of the UK drinking water marketplace – and in 2008 they launched the Aquavend Cool filter to be used in conjunction with plumbed water coolers. This was the first consumer orientated brand to have looked at water cooler filtration and they have certainly had some success. Companies such as Eden Springs and Water Coolers Direct have incorporated them into their range – and after looking at the product we have also decided to offer customers this option.  The filter specifications are shown below and it is up to customers to decide whether they want this filter fitted to their plumbed water cooler.

What is the Brita Water Cooler Product?

On the Brita website the product is described as - ”With its special activated carbon filter media, the AquaVend Cool filter cartridge mounted at the inlet side of the machine guarantees safe elimination of all unpleasant odours and tastes and reliably retains particles > 0,5 μm. It offers perfect protection of the machine and ensures perfect water quality.” This is a

Working water pressure capacity: 2 to 8 bar
Operating temperature: 4 – 30 °C
Operating position: horizontal and vertical”
Particle Filtration: > 0.5 micron
Capacity: 5000 litres or six months

What does this mean to our customers?

For customers the most important parts of the product description above are that filter is a solid carbon block (cheaper carbon inline filters are not blocks), that it works to 8 bar of pressure and that it filters water down to the 0.5 micron level. The Brita water cooler filter also has a six month lifespan which is the standard water cooler filter term in our industry.

The standard plumbed water cooler filter we supply customers with is a Pentek water cooler filter which is one of the higher spec’ed filters on the market. Our Pentek filter is also a solid carbon block, filters to the 1 micron level, and  is tested up to 8 bar of pressure.

Customers can choose whichever filter they wish when they either rent or purchase a plumbed water cooler from us. Please look at our range of purchase plumbed water coolers or rented plumbed water coolers and then call us on 0845  500 4455 and we will talk through filter options.
